Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump relies on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s streamed back into your home. This liquid is housed within the coils of a cooling system, but one of the most widely used refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being gradually eliminated in response to environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be in production. Introducing R-410A R-410A is EPA-recognized, chlorine-free and ozone-friendly. This means it will cool your home without hurting the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most efficient systems are designed to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system function efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and enhanced dehumidification, so you’re sure to stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Desert Suns Heating & Cooling in Albuquerque, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If your system was made before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is hard to find. Some manufacturers sell alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
